How to Prepare for Your Engagement Photoshoot
Step by step guide | Capturing the start of your forever
The moment you say "yes" to that magical question is one of the happiest and most breathtaking moments you’ll experience, it's the beginning of the journey toward becoming life partners with your favorite person. Before you immerse yourselves in the exciting chapter of wedding planning, there's an important milestone to celebrate first: your engagement! Trust me, soak in it as long as you can because it goes by quickly! This special event is the perfect opportunity to have the essence of your love and the joy you feel together, photographed.
Not only will your engagement photos be a special memento for you and your partner to look back on for decades to come, but it’s also a great opportunity to get any camera-shy-jitters out of the way and become more comfortable with your wedding photographer before the big day. This is a HUGE reason why I include engagement sessions in your wedding photography package! I want you to be as comfortable as possible being in front of the camera on your wedding day. This will help you feel more relaxed and set us up for photos that capture the true essence of your special day.
10 essential tips on how to prepare for your engagement photos
A true-to-you and stress-free photography experience
1. Choose a photographer you vibe with and whose work you feel connected to!
Choosing the right photographer is paramount to a successful engagement photoshoot and wedding photos. Do your research, read Google reviews, and check out their portfolio. If you feel connected to their work - inquire and schedule a meeting or a video call with them to discuss your vision and make sure you feel comfortable around them. A good connection with your photographer will make the whole process more enjoyable. 2. Determine the Location: Collaborate with your photographer
The location you choose for your engagement photo shoot can significantly influence the overall vibe and aesthetic of the photos. Consider places that hold a special meaning for both of you, such as where you first met or had your first date. Alternatively, you can opt for something truly unique to you and your partner. Personally, I love when couples think outside of the box and incorporate their personalities into their engagement photos. Are you an artist or musician? Foodie or adventure seeker? Let the inspiration flow from who you are!

3. Planning your Outfits
Don’t procrastinate on this step!
Coordinating your outfits doesn't mean you have to wear matching clothes. Instead, focus on complementary colors and styles that showcase your personality. Avoid overly busy patterns or logos that might distract from the main focus – your love for each other. Remember that comfort is key, as it will help you relax and be yourselves during the shoot. All of my couples receive a detailed photoshoot guide to help put your minds at ease when planning our time together.
4. Hair and Makeup
I always recommend scheduling your engagement photos and hair + makeup trails for the same day. This will show you how your wedding look will photograph before the big day - I’m all about having backup plans and this serves as an additional opportunity to make any adjustments with your hair and makeup team before your wedding. If you’d prefer a more authentic feel for your engagement photos, aim for a look that reflects your everyday self while adding a touch of elegance.

5. Best time for your Engagement Photos
Sunrise or Sunset
If you’re wanting your session to take place outside, I recommend either sunrise or sunset because it’s the best time of day for lighting. The right timing can make a significant difference in the quality of your photos. Scheduling your session during the "golden hour" – the hour after sunrise or before sunset when the light is soft, warm, and flattering. Avoid midday when the sun is at its brightest and can cast unflattering shadows. If you’re opting for an indoor shoot at a professional photography studio, the timeframe is much more flexible! Especially if the weather conditions are extreme.
6. Use your personalities as inspiration for the shoot
Incorporate personal elements into your engagement photoshoot to make it uniquely yours. Bring along props that are meaningful to your relationship or represent shared hobbies and interests. This personal touch will add depth and sentimentality to your photos, making them even more special. Need some examples, check out the list below for some inspiration,
Musician: Incorporate your favorite instrument, local music venue, or create a playlist of your favorite tunes for us to listen to during your session.
Painter/Artist: Incorporate your art, or favorite art gallery, or put together a date involving how you enjoy expressing yourself artistically. We can rent a studio and get crafty.
Adventure Seeker: Arizona is home to some of the most incredible landscapes, let’s explore a national park together.
Motorcycle or vintage car lover: Incorporating your favorite vehicle can lead to some really epic photos!
7. Turn photoshoot day into a date day
The more connected you and your partner feel on the day of your photoshoot, the more comfortable you’ll be in front of the camera.
Planning a shoot like a date will prompt all the lovey-dovey feels that will transform your photo gallery. The goal is for you to feel comfortable and natural in front of the camera, by incorporating your favorite date night activities; we can capture those authentic moments that feel genuine to you! The focus stays between you - while I focus on you!
8. Embrace the Moment
During the photoshoot, try to relax and enjoy the experience. Let go of any self-consciousness and focus on each other as you would on a regular date. I’ll guide you throughout the session with prompts while capturing candid moments of laughter, tenderness, and love.
9. Be Open to Spontaneity
While planning is essential, be open to embracing spontaneous moments during the shoot. If you want to sing your favorite song together or run into the ocean together - BY ALL MEANS, I’M HERE FOR IT! Some of the most beautiful and heartfelt photos come from unplanned gestures and interactions. Don't be afraid to let your emotions shine through and be fully present in the moment.
10. Have Fun!
Last but not least, remember that this photo shoot is a celebration of your love and the commitment you're making to each other. Embrace the joy and excitement, and don't be afraid to let loose and have fun during the shoot. Authenticity and genuine happiness are what will truly make your engagement photos shine.
Your engagement photos will be cherished for a lifetime, serving as a reminder of the love and excitement you felt during this special time. By following these tips and embracing the process, you'll be well-prepared to create stunning images that truly capture the essence of your unique love story. Congratulations on your engagement, and may your photoshoot be filled with love and laughter!
